Needs Assessment.png

Purpose

We developed this community needs assessment to ensure that AFNA’s programs and priorities are rooted in the real, lived experiences of forensic nurses across Arizona. Our goal is not to build services based on assumptions or national trends, but to respond directly to the clinical, emotional, professional, and systemic gaps that nurses in our state are navigating every day.

This assessment reflects what we consistently hear from forensic nurses in urban, rural, and tribal communities: that while the work is deeply meaningful, it is also isolating, under-resourced, and increasingly unsustainable without stronger structural support.

Mentorship and Career Support

We have identified a significant need for formal, accessible mentorship for both new and mid-career forensic nurses. Many nurses enter forensic practice without a clear roadmap for:

  • Clinical skill development beyond initial training

  • Navigating courtroom testimony and legal systems

  • Managing secondary trauma and emotional fatigue

  • Advancing into leadership, education, or advocacy roles

Currently, mentorship occurs informally and inconsistently, depending on where a nurse works and who happens to be available. This creates inequity in professional development and contributes to early burnout and attrition.

Countermeasure:

A statewide, structured mentorship program that pairs experienced forensic nurses with newer clinicians, supported by clear goals, regular check-ins, and curated educational resources.
